A.F. golf course vandalism
lands Cruz in custody
Last fall, the sixth green and the seventh fairway at American Falls Golf Course was badly damaged after a vehicle was drove onto the golf course.
City police later arrested Gilbert Cruz, 22, in relation to the case.
According to reports, Cruz had an underage girl in the vehicle with him at the time of the crime.
In December of last year, Cruz pled guilty to a charge of sexual battery of a minor child 16 or 17 years of age, and one count of malicious injury to property.
On the charge of sexual battery, Cruz was sentenced to the custody of the Idaho Department of Correction for a unified term of 12 years, of which four years were fixed and eight were indeterminate.
On the charge of malicious injury to property, the defendant was sentenced to a unified term of five years (four years fixed and one year indeterminate) with time to run concurrent with the previous sentence.
The court retained jurisdiction of the case for 180 days, and further ordered that Cruz pay $6,400 to the city of American Falls for the costs of repairing the golf course.
On April 10, Cruz again appeared before the court, which again retained jurisdiction of the case for 180 days.
Cruz was ordered to register as a sex offender.

FFA plans Mother’s Day plant sale

The American Falls Future Farmers of America chapter and the students in the agricultural biology and greenhouse management classes have been working daily since before the Christmas break to produce the best crop of bedding plants, ornamental pots, hanging baskets and vegetables since the greenhouse was completed in 2002.
“This year’s crop is at the perfect stage for Mother’s Day,” said FFA adviser Marc Beitia. “All of the plants are just coming into flower and the pots and baskets are on the verge of erupting into beautiful bouquets.”
Greenhouse manager Alison Duffin has done a wonderful job this spring in organizing, planning and coordinating to bring these plants to you for Mother’s Day, said Beitia.
Students have learned the importance of proper seeding and planting techniques in order to produce vigorous and healthy plants. They have also learned approved practices for transplanting, watering and fertilization.
The greenhouse will open to the public beginning Wednesday, May 7. Greenhouse hours will be from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday, May 7 and 10. The greenhouse will be open each day after that from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Arrangements can be made for other times by contacting Duffin or Beitia at American Falls High School, 226-2531.
Further arrangements can be made at the time of purchase to have students help with ground preparation and planting needs.
