Two claim state titles
Six of the 11 American Falls High School wrestlers going to the state tournament brought home medals, with two claiming state championships, as the wrestlers finished in sixth place following competition Friday and Saturday, Feb. 22 and 23, at Holt Arena in Pocatello.
Julian Gallegos and Efrain Medel brought home state championships from the state tournament. Abraham Torres and Tyson Burgemeister took fourth. Tate Grover took fifth and Bo Hohenfield took sixth. Also wrestling at state were Mason Chacon, Luke Sherburne, Andrew Saucedo, Bradyn Swanson and Walker Burgemeister.
Overall, the team took sixth place out of 21.
“I was very proud of our team because they wrestled like champions,” said Coach Jim Giulio. “Champions are the kids that go out there and get the very most out of their God-given ability. That is exactly what my kids did and why they are champions in my book.”
Gallegos said he felt like he was on cloud nine after the win.
“I feel proud to have something that no one can take away,” Gallegos said. The senior, who has wrestled since kindergarten, finished all of the matches in under a minute. He was a third place finisher at district and so came in as the underdog.
Gallegos also became a member of the Century Club after gaining his 100th win at the tournament. He wrestled at 182 pounds.
Medel said he never thought he would make it far enough to take state. The senior started wrestling in seventh grade. He wrestled at 220 pounds.
Both Medel and Gallegos said they were eating plenty of candy and drinking pop to celebrate after claiming the crowns.
