Locals head to state rodeo

Seven members of the American Falls/Aberdeen High School Rodeo Club are headed to the state finals rodeo that will be held in Pocatello on Saturday, June 8, through Saturday, June 15. The top six contenders on the district level will compete at the rodeo. The District 4 High School Rodeo held 12 rodeos in Pocatello, American Falls and Blackfoot over the last several months.

Aberdeen’s Lexie Lehman will go to state in all four of her events. She took first in pole bending, fourth in barrel racing, fifth in breakaway roping and fifth in goat tying. American Falls’ Hailey Driscoll, a freshman, will go to state in two events after taking second in barrel racing and fifth in pole bending.

American Falls’ Tyler Scherer and Gus Kuttler will go to state as partners in the team roping event. They won the district pole bending competition by a 13 point margin. Stetson Nielsen, also a freshman, took third in steer wrestling, and will go to state in that event.

American Falls’ Rochelle Whitnah and Hunter Morris will go to state in cow cutting. Whitnah took fourth and Morris took fifth in that event.

The top placers were honored at an awards banquet held on Monday May 20, at the Bannock County Fairgrounds. Up-and-coming local rodeo stars include junior wranglers Cassidy Swanson, Jacee Nielson and Chance Moldenhauer.

The final district rodeos were held on Friday and Saturday, March 17 and 18. Driscoll took third in the barrel racing at the rodeo on Friday, with a time of 17.858. Lehman took fifth in barrel racing.

Driscoll took first in pole bending with a time of 20.646. Lehman took third with a time of 21.407. American Falls’ Rochelle Whitnah took seventh with a time of 23.931, and American Falls’ Hunter Morris took ninth with a time of 26.506.

Lehman took fourth in breakaway roping with a time of 39.1. She then took fifth in goat tying with a time of 10.03, where Whitnah took seventh with a time of 12.23.

Morris and Maicie Bullock took third in team roping with a time of 36.94.

The next day, Driscoll took second in the barrel racing with a time of 17.948. Lehman took fifth with 18.272. Driscoll took second in pole bending where Lehman took third with times of 22.223 and 22.337 respectively. Whitnah took sixth with a time of 24.81. Morris took ninth with a time of 28.588.

Nielson took second in the steer wrestling with a time of 11.98. Lehman took fifth in the goat tying with a time of 11.68, and Whitnah took seventh with a time of 13.39.
