Cards are out in area businesses for the annual turkey shoot sponsored by the Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce. Spots on the cards are $1 each. Buying more than one spot increases the chance of winning a turkey for the holidays. The cards will be shot on Saturday, Nov. 23.
The turkey shoot was started more than 20 years ago to help purchase the Christmas lights that are used to decorate Main Street for the Christmas holiday.
All of the money raised from the turkey shoot, after the purchase of the turkeys, is placed in a special account for the Christmas lights. New LED light decorations were purchased three years ago for $9,661.80. The purchase of those depleted the fund.
The Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce appreciates all of the past supporters of the turkey shoot that have made the purchasing of the new lights possible and they ask everyone to join in the turkey shoot this year and for years to come. By purchasing the $1 spot on the card it not only gives a person a chance to win a turkey for the holidays, it also helps build up the funds over the next 10 to 20 years to make purchasing new decorations possible when they are needed.
The chamber will also accept any donations given for the Christmas light fund. When the donation is made, specify where it is being donated and it will be placed in the appropriate account.
The decorations are typically put up during the last week in November, after Thanksgiving.
The chamber also wants to make everyone aware that the Christmas Light Parade will be held on Monday, Dec. 2. They invite everyone to start working on their floats for the parade. Everyone is invited to enter a float to help kick off the Christmas season.
