American Falls High School wrestler Tate Grover captured first place at the state championship tournament in the 182 lbs. weight category on Saturday, March 1. It’s the sophomore’s first state title.
Grover won four straight matches to take the championship title. He wrestled off against Triston Zamora of Fruitland. Fruitland went on to win the team championship.
“For a sophomore to do something like that in that high of a weight class is pretty amazing,” said Coach Jim Giulio.
Also placing at the tournament was Dillinger Fausett in the 98 lbs. weight category in third place and Kameron Prust in the 195 lbs. weight category in third place. Fausett, a sophomore, beat out Konner Hiatt from South Fremont. Prust, a senior, placed after beating Francisco Viveros of Kimberly.
Overall, the team placed 11th at the state tournament with ten wrestlers. The team wrestled hard, Giulio said, but for many of them it was not to be. Still, Giulio was positive about the upcoming year. Nearly everybody on this year’s team will be back for next year, and with a strong freshman team, things are looking good for the wrestling program at AFHS, he said.
