Morgan Cortez of American Falls, daughter of Pete and Holly Cortez, has recently returned from two of the most renowned Red Angus events this year. The North American Junior Red Angus event (NAJRAE) in Grand Island, NB, and the Junior Red Angus Round-Up (JRA) in Sacramento, CA, are the largest Junior Red Angus events held in the summer months.
Cortez participated in many competitions at both events and was recently elected as the 2014-2015 National Secretary for the NAJRAE. She and other board members kept busy during the week-long event by checking in participants, organizing contests, and overseeing the entire event to keep things in order. Over 200 contestants from around the nation competed in public speaking, showmanship, market sales, photography contests and more. At the awards banquet, Cortez was awarded second place in public speaking, first place in Herdsman Quiz, and was the seventh overall high point individual.
After driving back from Nebraska, Cortez hopped on a flight to Sacramento, CA, the next morning to meet over 50 Junior Red Angus members for the annual JRA Round-Up. The group toured several places in California including Yosemite National Park, the home of Kentucky Derby winner, California Chrome, and several cattle operations including Mendoza Ranch, Silveira Brothers, and McPhee Red Angus. The members of the JRA also participated in a number of competitions and leadership tasks. Cortez took first place in Essay, Website Design, Business Card design, PowerPoint, and Print Advertisement. She also received second place in Extemporaneous Speaking and was Reserve Champion High Point Senior.
