The American Falls girls’ basketball team had a strong win against the Bear Lake Bears on Thursday, Jan. 27 – what may have been the first conference win for the girls in several years. It was a decisive 54-32 victory.
Everything just came together for them on that night, said Coach Brandon Vaughan.
“It was a big win for our program,” Vaughan said, “especially on the road.”
They were able to sink the free throws and layups that have been evading them the rest of the season, Vaughan said. Having an especially strong night was Maria Sanchez, who scored 24 points for the team, and Kimberlyn Fehringer, who sank 15 points. It was the best game of the year for Sanchez, Vaughan said.
Really the entire team came together to play well that that night, Vaughan said. Also scoring were Caitlin McOmber with eight, Lyndsey Woodworth with five, and Alyx Morris with two.
The girls then played their final game against Snake River at home on Saturday, Jan. 28. Snake River was able to pull out a narrow victory in the second half, 43-36.
The two teams stayed neck and neck in the first half, but a few points lost in the third and fourth quarters made all the difference. However, they played well defensively against a physically bigger team, Vaughan said, but the other team’s size made it difficult to catch up when the Beavers didn’t score on a possession.
Free throws made a big difference for the final score as well. Snake River attempted 27 free throws, while the Beavers only stood before the basket four times in the evening.
McOmber had a strong night for the Beavers, scoring ten points, as did Fehringer, who also scored ten. Also scoring were Charidee Permann with seven, Sanchez with four, Morris with three, and Woodworth with two. Fehringer and Permann both pulled down five rebounds.
The girls now head to the District 5 tournament, which starts on Saturday, Feb, 4. The girls will be playing Marsh Valley at Century High School in Pocatello at 12 p.m.
