Irvin Allan Satterfield, age 91, died Friday, May 21, 2010, at the Pocatello Care & Rehabilitation Center.
Irvin was born on June 23, 1918 at home in the rock house located about a mile east of the unincorporated town of Grandview, ID. Irvin was the oldest son of Luther (Luke) and Laura Satterfield. He attended school in Grandview and also in Aberdeen for three of his high school years. Irvin finished his senior year at Pocatello High School. He played on the state championship basketball team of 1936 and ran hurdles at the state track meet. Irvin was an avid golfer and played frequently at the American Falls Golf Course up until the age of 90. He loved baseball and enjoyed watching the Marsh Falls Legion Team play over the years. He also was a super fan of the American Falls High School girls’ basketball teams.
After high school Irvin worked for the railroad for a time before joining the Navy in September of 1941. Irvin was a yeoman 3rd class petty officer and was stationed at Pearl Harbor on the U.S.S. Argonne at the time of the attack on December 7, 1941. He helped with the aftermath of the attack. Later he was assigned to Cien Fuegos, Cuba, working in intelligence prior to Castro taking over the country. During his time in the service he met his bride, Isabel (Dolly) Morrison and they married in Denver, CO, on May 16, 1944. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in October of 1945.
Irvin worked for the railroad in Los Angeles, CA, after the war where the two oldest children, Phil and LeeAnn, were born. Dolly became ill due to asthma and during a visit to Idaho she felt so good that it was their decision to move to Idaho and farm. They built the house on what is known as Thompson’s Corner in 1950. Two more sons, Dean and Tim, were born. Irvin continued to farm along with working another occupation as a potato inspector until they sold the farm in 1974 and moved to American Falls. Irvin remained working for the USDA Potato Inspection Service until he retired in 1983.
Irvin was the oldest son of 11 children. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dolly; four older sisters, Avis Huffman, Lila Neiheisel, Ethel Christensen and Rita Satterfield; and three younger brothers, Lynn, Glen, and LaVon Satterfield. He is survived by two brothers; Dallas Satterfield (Edith) of Blackfoot, and Murray Satterfield of Cascade, ID; and one sister, Gaye Robinson of Tacoma, WA; his four children, Phil Satterfield of Boise, LeeAnn (Chris) Christensen of Rigby, Dean (Cathy) Satterfield of Boise, and Tim (Kathy) Satterfield of Aberdeen; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be under the direction of Davis-Rose Mortuary of American Falls. A viewing was held at the mortuary from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, May 23. The funeral service was held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Monday, May 24, at 11 a.m. with burial to follow at Falls View Cemetery. |
