Sagebrush and Satire
by Susan Curry

Happy Victoria Day
To inform those who are not in the know out there, I was actually born in Canada. True, my parents moved back to The States before I was a year old, but according to the Canadian government, I have dual citizenship. (The American government thinks I’m just plain old American.)
We, as in Americans, recently celebrated Cinco de Mayo, so I think we should also celebrate something with our neighbors north of the border. After all, if America is The Great Melting Pot, then we should celebrate everyone’s holidays, right?
The Chinese are taken care of with the Chinese New Year celebration. This usually involves ingesting alcohol.
The Jewish holiday of Chanukah is at least recognized if not celebrated by one and all. There is usually wine consumed on these eight days.
Africa is taken care of with Kwanzaa.
America was mostly settled by Europeans, so those holidays are already built in.
Native Americans? Celebrated in a way with Columbus Day, although many Native groups want to change this to anti-Columbus Day. Some believe that’s when the borders should have been closed in the first place.
Not sure what to do about India, although they celebrate Ghandi’s birthday every October 2. That might be worth celebrating, as long as the celebration includes alcohol.
According to statistics, India is the third-leading nation in alcohol consumption, right behind China and the good old U.S. of A, so I’m betting the celebration of Ghandi’s birthday includes imbibing.
Speaking of alcohol, we celebrate Russia every time we take a shot of vodka. Za Vas!
Mother’s Day should be celebrated by the entire world, every single day. But I may be biased; I have the best mother ever and want to celebrate her a lot.
Since we’re all celebrating everything with the entire world (is anyone else out there beginning to feel like a college student again?), we should celebrate Victoria Day as well.
So what if Victoria Day is in honor of an English queen’s birthday? It involves fireworks. I don’t recall any fireworks on Mother’s Day (other than that year I forgot), it’s been a long time since last July 4, and I like fireworks. I also like celebrations, barbecues and good times.
So let’s dig out last year’s leftover sparklers and Roman candles and have a great time on May 21.
Happy Victoria Day!
