Dorothy Meyers, the loving matriarch of our family and good friend to many, passed peacefully at her home Wednesday, Nov. 15,2023, just two weeks shy of her 98th birthday while in the company of her sister, Mary Simms.
Dorothy was born Nov. 28, 1925 to William T. (Bill) and Sarah Elizabeth (Beth) Barnard in American Falls, ID, at the old Schiltz hospital. She spent her early childhood years playing along the riverbanks below the American Falls Dam where her father was employed by Idaho Power Company as an operator. His employment afforded them indoor plumbing and electricity in the Idaho Power homes.
She graduated from American Falls High School and thereafter married Merle John Meyers June 12, 1944. She and Merle moved to Midnight Creek to a cattle ranch owned by Merle’s parents, John and Mabel Meyers. They lived without electricity and indoor plumbing on the ranch until early in the 1950’s. They broke out a quarter section of sagebrush land on lower Bannock Creek about 1958 and developed it into a successful cattle/hay ranch. Mom lived on that ranch until 2017. She then resided at Cottonwood Cove in Pocatello until her passing.
Dorothy and Merle had three children who lived to adulthood. Jerry (Sidni), Jay (deceased) (Renae), and Judy (Brent Kunz). Son, Jimmie, passed shortly after birth in 1964.
Dorothy was involved socially. She participated in a bridge club over 40 years. She spent many years serving as a board member of the Harms Memorial Hospital in American Falls. She proudly served as one of Power County’s Election Judges.
One of her life’s highlights was serving many years as an ordinance worker in the Idaho Falls Temple. She was very excited when the Pocatello Temple was announced and was able to meet her goals to be able to attend with family and friends. She accomplished that goal!
She is survived by brother Virgil Barnard and sister Mary Simms. She was preceded in death by brothers William Charles Barnard and Gilbert John Barnard.
She has many loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She has a 3’x4’ photo-board hung on her kitchen wall plastered with 100+ photos of her posterity and very close friends.
Services were held at Pocatello West Stake Center, 3444 Hawthorne Road, in Pocatello on Friday, Nov. 24. 2023. Friends and family were received at 9:30 a.m. Services began at 11 a.m. Interment was at the Falls View Cemetery in American Falls approximately 1 p.m.
